Islamic decree against health insurance

Posted on 30 September 2008 by Basha Shaikh

Here is a story about Islamic organizations terming health insurance policies as illegal and issuing a fatwa asking Muslims to keep away from them.

This has raised a doubt in my mind as to how Islam cannot allow taking health insurance. I have a valid reason. At the time of Holy Prophet (s.aw.s) whenever there was any war, soldiers used to cover themselves with armor to protect them. In my opinion the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.s) has shown that one has the right to protect one self against any uncertain event. No matter that the ultimate protection lies in God’s hands.

In the same vein, whether your health cover will help you or not is ultimately in God’s hands; but it IS your responsibility to make sure that you are adequately protected.

The point I want to make is, please provide proper daleel (proof) why it has been declared illegal so that if I am wrong I may correct myself. If possible, quote Quranic ayat and tradition or precedent supporting it.

No religion stops any person from protecting oneself against the unforeseen.
Health insurance cannot be a taboo in any religion, its a simple device to ensure future protection, and there is nothing illegal about health insurance…author has very well asked for appropriate proof to confirm its illegal…religious believes shouldn’t be mixed with health…Its rightly said god helps those who help themselves.

Even I believe that no religion can stop people from buying health insurance policies. Writer seems to have good knowledge about the religion. People should not blindly follow a religion.

So Basha I think no religion is saying like that but if some one says like that there has to be some reason. Kindly also give the reason for your statement.

  4. Riddhima Says:

Religious believes should be kept at bay whe it comes to health…and i don’t see any harm if one takes a health insurance…it only goes to show ones shallow thinking by coming up with something like this.

arent we healed by Jesus’ stripes? isn’t it God himself who creates sickness and heals those who he has forgiven? and as with all insurance, are we not showing ourselves to be evil, temporal-minded men who will pay one sum of money (insurance) in order to protect another sum of money (health care bills)?
